Dony and I caught our breath in awe, as we approached the big, yellow farmhouse.

Jet-black squirrels leapt from majestic tree to tree. Busy lipstick-red cardinals became living ornaments, dancing/flying ’cross the winter wonderland.

“God sure is showing off,” I grinned, sounding like my mother.

We made our way out of the car, finally reaching the old familiar entry.

“Got the coffee brewing and chocolate-chip cookies in the oven,” Gloria said, quickly opening the door. “Bill is already in the den warming up the piano.”

The mingled aroma of cedar logs crackling on the fire, cookies rising, and scented candles was glorious... it smelled like home.

“So glad you made it!” Bill yelled from the den. “I hear it may get really nasty out there!” I whispered a grateful prayer that God had cooperated with the weather to snow us in.

The next three days we all homesteaded the den with mounds of reference books, legal pads, cassette recorders and endless trays of Gloria’s scrumptious goodies. It felt like we were in a creative cocoon, brimming with fresh notes and lyrical surprises. At the end of the third day, nine new songs had been birthed, including Gloria and Dony’s classic anthem, “Upon This Rock.”

I’m happy to hear that you’ve been reading the Word,
And spending time to study and learn,
I’m glad for all the hours you have spent on your knees
’Stead of wondering just which way you should turn.
You tell me meditation is just what the world needs,
And I reckon what you’re saying is true,
I was glad when I heard you’re getting into the Word
But is the Word getting into you?

I heard you’re into the Word, getting into the Word,
But is the Word getting into you?
I heard you’re into the Word, getting into the Word,
But is the Word getting into you?

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting you down,
I’m glad for every chapter you’ve read,
But reading and doing are two different things,
And the Word without the Spirit is dead.
Has it made you more loving to your wife and your kids,
Honest and straight, through and through,
Have your attitudes changed since you’ve been into the Word,
Is the Word getting into you?

I heard you’re into the Word, getting into the Word,
But is the Word getting into you?
I heard you’re into the Word, getting into the Word,
But is the Word getting into you?
